Slice of justice for sandwich maker

Jul 28, 2010

A Southall-based sandwich maker, has been successfully prosecuted after pleading guilty for failing to tackle an uncontrolled mouse infestation.

The firm, which distributes sandwiches to newsagents, convenience stores and petrol stations throughout the UK pleaded guilty to 12 offences at Ealing Magistrate’s Court in May. Eleven breaches related to food hygiene issues whilst the remaining offence was for ignoring an emergency prohibition notice, which required the premises to close.

They were first inspected by the council last July following complaints about rats and excessive rubbish. During the initial visit, regulatory services officers identified seven food hygiene offences, including an uncontrolled infestation of mice, dirty floors and dumping hundreds of sandwiches outside the premises. The firm had also failed to provide staff with basic food hygiene training.

The council required the immediate closure of the premises, but the Company chose to ignore this and reopened for business the same day. The notice was eventually lifted five days later, after a follow-up inspection found the company had made all the necessary improvements.

When officials conducted a further inspection in September 2009, four further offences were identified. Councillor Ranjit Dheer said: “It’s shocking that this company was preparing food in such unhygienic conditions. At the same time, I can’t believe they had the audacity to open up for business the same day that we required them to close.

“I’m pleased the court has recognised the seriousness of the situation and it is clearly reflected in the hefty fine they have meted out. This case should serve as reminder that we will prosecute individuals and businesses which flout regulations and put people’s health at serious risk.”

The Company was fined a total of £14,400, £1,200 for each of the 12 offences and ordered to pay the council’s costs of £5,785.37 and a victim surcharge of £15.
